One the way back from our sabbatical, my girlfriend and I took a city break in Berlin; somewhere I’d been several years ago for a stag do so unfortunately the only culture I saw was the bottom of a stein in a bar we named spoons.

This time round was a tad different. Hansjorg Mayer had an exhibition named Typoems and Artist Books in the Kunstbibliothek. I’ll be honest and say I didn’t know much about the guy before hand which left me feeling pretty ignorant (and inspired) after I left. The exhibit showed a vast variety of Mayer’s work, from early sketchbooks through to large format prints.

If you’re a fan of lateral typography and type-as-image I’d definitely check his work out. I can imagine him and Werkman were battling it out back in the day.
